Brooklyn Youth Chorus holds placement auditions for students ages 7-18 to help us ensure your singer is placed in the program level that will be best for them. Levels are organized first by age then by experience and ability. You can find a placement audition that works for you using the scheduling tool on this page.
For younger singers ages 5-6, we offer a Pre-Preparatory Music Class without a placement audition.
Brooklyn Youth Chorus Divisions
Brooklyn Youth Chorus divisions are organized by age to support healthy vocal development at different stages of growth and maturity. Within these age-based divisions, singers are placed in levels that reflect their skill, experience, and commitment. Our most advanced students are invited to audition for one of the three performing ensembles. All students are assessed annually to determine placement for the following program year.

About Placement Auditions
Placement auditions are for singers ages 7 and above and are conducted in a relaxed, informal atmosphere, and students do not need to prepare anything in advance. The audition lasts between 5-10 minutes and includes simple pitch-matching exercises, singing scales and the familiar song, “Happy Birthday.” No prior experience is required to sing with Brooklyn Youth Chorus, but a love of singing is essential!
Financial Aid
Brooklyn Youth Chorus charges an annual tuition for its program. Payment may be made up front in one payment or monthly. The Chorus provides financial aid and scholarships to any family in need. Please do not hesitate to join Brooklyn Youth Chorus due to financial concerns; we work with each family to ensure the program is accessible for everyone.
The Chorus maintains an extensive need-based financial aid policy. We encourage all interested singers, regardless of economic circumstances, to join. A financial aid application is required and are reviewed on a rolling basis. Financial aid for private lessons and elective classes is offered to families after their first year in the program.
Pre-Preparatory Music Class for ages 5 & 6
Children who will be ages 5-6 by September 1 of the 2024/25 school year are eligible for our Pre-Preparatory level classes, no audition necessary.
This class is aimed at activating each child’s musical potential in a play-based informal setting that feeds their creativity while building foundational music skills.
About Our Program
Running from September to June each year, the Chorus offers vocal instruction and private lessons for students, separated by age and experience level, in our Training Divisions and Performing Ensembles.
As students progress through Brooklyn Youth Chorus, they also have the opportunity to participate in pre-professional Performing Ensembles. Our Performing Ensembles work on special projects throughout the year, including live appearances, professional recordings, and original choral productions.
Singers in our Training Divisions and Performing Ensembles gather together twice a year for two special concerts: Holiday Harmonies (December) and Spring Sings (May).
