WQXR - We Shall All Be Changed: Musical Reflections on 9/11

We Shall All Be Changed is a musical reflection on the twentieth anniversary of 9/11, showing that as tragedy and trauma reshape our lives and communities, people often find profound comfort and hope in the transcendent power of music. Exploring both the immediate aftermath as well as commemorations in the years to come, the program weaves interviews from musicians and composers with musical selections.

Works include plaintive classical anchors such as Brahms’ German Requiem, while also featuring newer compositions including John Adams’ On the Transmigration of Souls and Robert Moran’s Trinity Requiem. Composer John Adams describes how he captured the deep pain and intimate losses felt by New Yorkers, and musicians from the New York Philharmonic and Brooklyn Youth Chorus recall how healing it was to take part in the performances that consoled so many in the weeks after the Twin Towers fell. Host John Schaefer guides us through the scenes and stories of a city that suffered and a music community that persevered.
