The Brooklyn Youth Chorus is thrilled to announce its 2019-20 Composer Competition! The selected composer will be commissioned to write a piece for our Men’s Ensemble.
SAMPLE SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Entries should be:
- original ensemble compositions (choral or instrumental) written within the last 10 years (2009 or later)
- written for any choral or instrumental voicing
The scores you are submitting are NOT the work we will perform. These scores serve as a work sample from which a composer will be selected to write an original choral work.
The eventual work will be:
- 3-part Men’s Choir (TBB, TTB); click here for detailed notes for composers
- a capella, or with piano accompaniment
- five to eight minutes in length
- original and with no prior public performance (public performance is defined in the U.S. copyright law to include any music played outside a normal circle of friends and family)
COMPETITION TIMELINE
- Monday, November 4, 2019 – Sample submission deadline; all samples must be received by 12:00 pm EST
- Monday, November 18, 2019 – The winner will be notified
- Monday, January 6, 2020 – First draft deadline; the selected composer must submit a first draft
- Monday, February 3, 2020 – Final draft deadline; the selected composer must submit a final draft
- February 2020 – The winner will be announced to the general public
- Saturday, May 16, 2020 – Premiere performance of the winning composition at Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre
QUALIFICATIONS
- open to all composers regardless of age or nationality
SUBMISSION PROCESS
- 2 sample scores must be submitted via our online submission form along with audio records (midi or other mockup is acceptable)
- Entry scores should not include composer’s name so that evaluation and judging of each composition may be conducted anonymously
PRIZE
The competition winner will receive:
- a prize of $500 (US)
- a world premiere performance by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus Men’s Ensemble
- a well-rehearsed video or audio recording of the live performance
